It’s fun to borrow a little of this and a little of that to start us out on our own home decor design, but I must ask where are you in your home? Is your home a reflection of you and those you care about? To be specific, your home should tell a story of who and what you are, a tale of your travels, loves, hobbies or collectibles. As an interior designer something I encounter more often than not is a safe approach using only store bought pieces (usually furniture stores) so I would like to share a few basic tips on how easy it is to personalize your own home!
Custom-made globe lighting, reupholstered chairs, a vintage cocktail table & a commissioned piece of wall art from a local artisan are a sure way to keep a one of a kind feel to your personal design.
Occasionally we have some design limitations when it comes to large furniture pieces such as a sofa based on textiles & budget, but truly it stops there. Do you have chairs that have seen better days or perhaps an ottoman that is just out of date? Try reupholstering them & for extra fun be bold and use two contrasting fabrics! Every well-designed space benefits from artwork. why not go to your favorite artist or gallery and find a one of a kind piece or have one created just for your space? Department stores have thousands of the same mass-produced artwork and if you like it, so do the masses. Don’t get me wrong I too am a fan, I only suggest we use it sparingly so we avoid a living room that looks like the furniture store! Have you noticed the latest trend in custom lighting? I have discovered lighting can be such fun to create interesting conversation pieces. The next time you pass a cool basket or unique item have it turned into a fabulous light fixture!
